The Nutshuis Open Air Film Festival kicks off with three short films by Dutch makers who look further than the width of the screen, and made a lasting impression on the press and the public with these small-scale films on large-scale issues.
Nothing to Declare
Having fled their country, two men and a woman are hiding in the loading space of a lorry on their way to a new life in Europe. Touching moments merge with grim reality. This highly acclaimed portrayal of the refugee crisis was the Dutch Oscar entry for the best short film in 2018.
NL, 2018 | Director: Hetty de Kruijf | 20 minutes | English subtitles
During the Paris riots in 2005, four young police recruits from the impoverished suburbs find themselves literally stuck between two worlds. On their way to the scene in the armoured bus, they are forced to think about where their loyalties really lie: with the French authorities or with the rioting youth? An explosive and stifling film.
NL, 2018 | Director: David-Jan Bronsgeest | 12 minutes | English subtitles
The Atomic Soldiers
A probing documentary in which the few surviving witnesses of the American nuclear tests carried out in the 1950s talk about their experiences. After remaining silent for decades, they are now giving their accounts for the very first time. A small-scale film concept that leads to complex, emotional stories.
NL, 2018 | Director: Morgan Knibbe | 23 minutes | English subtitles
